HULA HOOP, SUPERBALL, and HACKY SACK—great retro properties sure to delight and entertain lottery players everywhere.

The Wham-O story is inspirational. Founders Richard P. Knerr and Arthur K. “Spud” Melin started their company with a homemade slingshot created to launch meat balls while training their falcons! A chance encounter in 1948 with the enquiry to purchase one of their handy dandy slingshots was the start to their empire. Through the years their multitude of products entertained the masses, with the following three firmly cementing their place in history.

HULA HOOP: In the spring of 1958, the Hula Hoop became Wham-O’s first bona fide mega hit. Though some say the term ‘hula’ was first associated with the game of keeping a hoop twirling around one’s waist in the 1700’s, it was Wham-O that launched the Hula Hoop craze and solidated its comeback in 1963. When Knerr and Melin sold the company in 1982, they were selling a million and a half Hula Hoops a year. This item originally marketed for kids ages 6-60, is an undeniable feel-good blast from the past for all baby boomers alike.

SUPERBALL: Wham-O’s top ‘super toy’ ever produced is without doubt the ever-popular SuperBall. Born in 1965 and boasting 92% resiliency (it bounces back 92% of the distance it’s dropped), it has 100% fan approval. Not only could it bounce over your head, but it could bounce over your house! In 1965 six million SuperBalls were sold with kids and adults alike bouncing and dribbling these colorful balls everywhere.

HACKY SACK: Though Wham–O bought and introduced Hacky Sack in 1983 from inventors John Stalberger and Mike Marshall, the co-operative kicking sport has ancient origins from China, Thailand, Native America, and nearly every country. The name ‘Hacky Sack’ has since become a genericised trademark and refers to either the footbag or footbag game—a circle consisting of two or more players that keep the footbag off the ground without using their hands. These game dynamics are the perfect vehicle to inspire unique and great lottery ticket designs!
